God’s Love Story: Understanding Jesus’ Love

Olivia Rebboah   -

Valentine’s Day is often wrapped in hearts, roses, and love songs. It celebrates romance, connection, and the desire to be chosen. And while those things are beautiful, they point to something even deeper—a greater love story that began long before chocolate boxes and handwritten cards.

God’s love story.

From the very beginning, Scripture tells a story of a God who pursues His people—not because we earned it, but because love is who He is.

A Love That Chose Us First

Before we ever loved God, He loved us.

“We love because He first loved us.” (1 John 4:19)

Jesus didn’t wait for us to get our lives together. He didn’t wait for perfection, strength, or faithfulness. He stepped into our brokenness, our mess, our doubts and chose us anyway.

That kind of love is hard to grasp because it’s not transactional. It doesn’t say, “I’ll love you if…”
It says, “I love you—period.”

A Love That Sacrificed Everything

At the center of God’s love story is the cross.

“But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)

Jesus’ love wasn’t just spoken—it was shown. It cost Him everything. This is not a shallow or fleeting love. It is a love willing to suffer, to sacrifice, to stay.

On a day when the world celebrates romantic gestures, we’re reminded that the greatest act of love was Jesus laying down His life so we could have new life.

A Love That Pursues, Even When We Wander

So often, human love can feel conditional. We fear being too much, not enough, or eventually left behind. But Jesus’ love doesn’t disappear when we struggle or stumble.

“Nothing can separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:39)

He pursues us in our wandering. He meets us in our doubts. He remains steady when everything else feels uncertain.

This is a love that doesn’t give up.

A Love That Invites Us Into Relationship

God’s love story isn’t meant to be admired from a distance—it’s an invitation.

Jesus desires closeness, relationship, and intimacy with us. Not the kind based on obligation, but on grace. Not rooted in fear, but in trust.

He calls us beloved. Chosen. Known.

And when we truly begin to understand His love, it changes how we love others—our spouses, our kids, our friends, and even ourselves.

This Valentine’s Day…

Whether you’re celebrating with someone special, surrounded by family, or feeling the ache of loneliness, know this:

You are deeply loved.

Not temporarily.
Not conditionally.
Not imperfectly.

But fully, sacrificially, and eternally—by Jesus.

God’s love story didn’t end at the cross. It continues every day as He pursues hearts, restores hope, and reminds us that we are never alone.

That is the greatest love story ever told.
