Blueprints: What “Storing Our Treasure In Heaven” Really Means.

Gabrielle Christie   -

Welcome back to week six of our nine-week series, Blueprints: Jesus’s Plan for Life. This journey through the Sermon on the Mount has been all about Jesus not only offering us salvation, but a solid, storm-withstanding way of life. Today, we’re diving deep into a powerful truth from Matthew 6—and we’re going to talk about treasures, hearts, and what happens when moths, rust, and thieves get involved.

But first, a story.

A Woman Who Modeled the Blueprint

There’s a woman who deeply shaped my life—my grandmother, Dorothy, or as we lovingly called her, Grandma Dot. She was born into the Great Depression, and her world was turned upside down when the economy crashed. Banks failed. Jobs vanished. Security dissolved.

At 14, Grandma Dot dropped out of school to care for her aging adoptive parents. She hustled—nannying, working odd jobs—and eventually became a successful business owner and a well-known real estate agent. Through it all, she clung not to things, but to people. Relationships. Faith. She used to tell me, “Earthly things are fleeting. But people and love? That’s what matters most.”

That wisdom? It’s not just hers—it’s straight from Jesus.

When the Storm Hits

In light of recent tragedies in Texas—missing children, grieving families, first responders searching tirelessly—it’s clear: life is fragile. Things fall apart. We face floods, loss, and heartache. And when they come (not ifwhen), our foundation matters.

So we prayed together, because that’s what the Church does. And then we turned to Matthew 6.

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven… For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
Matthew 6:19–21

Where Is Your Treasure?

Let’s be real. When you hear “treasure,” your mind might go where mine did: Pirates of the Caribbean. (Johnny Depp, gold coins, dramatic music—you get it.) But Jesus wasn’t talking about pirate loot.

In the original Greek, “treasure” is thēsauros—a precious deposit. And “heart” (kardia) isn’t just your emotions or physical heart, but the seat of your deepest desires and values.

So ask yourself:
What’s your precious deposit?
Is it your home? Your car? Your cup collection? (Guilty!)
Your job title? Your vacation plans?

All these things can be good. But none are permanent.

Let Me Tell You About Meredith

My car—Meredith Grey—meant the world to me. It was my graduation gift, a promise from my dad before he passed away. It carried me across the country when I moved into ministry. I had custom plates, sentimental stickers—it was mine.

And then one morning, I found out it had been stolen. Stripped. Totaled. Even got a parking ticket after it was stolen.

Just like that, what I thought was secure… wasn’t. And that’s exactly what Jesus is warning us about.

Treasures in Heaven

What does that even mean?

No, you can’t hand God your storage unit keys. What Jesus is offering is a whole new lens: using earthly resources for spiritual investment.

That looks like:

  • Supporting your local church
  • Funding mission trips
  • Serving vulnerable communities
  • Loving people deeply and selflessly

The point? Moths, rust, and thieves can touch your things—but not your heart when it’s anchored in Christ.

Meet Lydia, Priscilla, and Aquila

In the New Testament, these women (and one awesome couple) gave their homes, their time, their lives for the Kingdom. They’re not remembered for what they owned—but for what they gave.

They were living proof that what you treasure shapes your life.

The Heart of It All

Jesus talks about money a lot—not because He needs it, but because He knows it competes for our hearts. And He wants all of yours. Not a portion. Not on Sundays. All of it.

Let me ask you:

If Jesus asked for the keys to your house, your car, or even your money… would you give it to Him?

Three Things to Remember

  1. Jesus Cares More About Your Heart Than Your Stuff

“We brought nothing with us into the world, and we can’t take anything with us when we leave it.” – 1 Timothy 6:7
What you have isn’t what defines you—whose you are does.

  2. True Treasure Is a Matter of Heart Posture

“Take delight in the Lord, and He will give you your heart’s desires.” – Psalm 37:4
When your delight is in Him, your desires begin to align with His. It’s not about Him giving you everything you want—it’s about you wanting what He wants.

  3. What You Treasure Shapes Your Life

“The Word of God is alive and powerful… It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.” – Hebrews 4:12
God’s Word is the ultimate blueprint. It’s not just ink on paper. It transforms hearts, relationships, priorities.

So… What Are You Building?

Are you building a life on things that decay and disappear? Or are you building on Christ—the solid, unshakeable foundation?

We’re not saying, “Give away all your stuff.” We’re saying: give God your heart. And ask Him what He wants you to do with what He’s given you.

Let’s store what can’t be stolen.
Let’s build what can’t be broken.
Let’s live for what won’t fade.

Because that, friends, is the kind of treasure worth chasing.
